Spherical Homunculus

In neuroscience, the homunculus is a distorted map of the human body drawn across the brain’s sensory and motor cortices. Hands, lips, and tongue appear grotesquely enlarged compared to the torso or legs, reflecting how much neural real estate is devoted to those areas rather than their actual proportions. It is not the body as it is, but the body as it is perceived. an internal model shaped by use, sensation, and attention.

Spherical Homunculus reimagines the human body as a hybrid form. The torso, sculpted first in clay and then digitised through 3D scanning, and reconfigured with spherical volumes inserted later through CAD. This collision of handmade and digital processes reflects the shifting boundaries of embodiment in a technological age, where the body is no longer fixed but endlessly editable data.
